What is Glaucoma:

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in the world. It occurs because of increased intraocular pressure (IOP) that damages the optic nerve. Also known as the “silent thief of sight”, glaucoma generally shows no early symptoms, and once vision loss is manifested for a long time, where the peripheral vision slowly gets more and more constricted, leaving only a central island of vision in advanced cases.

Causes of Glaucoma

There are multiple risk factors in patients developing glaucoma. It is more common after trauma, due to the use of some medicines, due to advanced corneas, but in most cases the exact cause is unknown. The fluid from within the eye (aqueous humor) is produced in a structure called ciliary body, which drains via Schlemm’s Canal. The commonest cause is when this pathway gets closed. Increased IOP damages the optic nerve.

Symptoms of Glaucoma

Frequent change in glasses

Poor eyesight in low light conditions

Closed/tunnel vision

Treatment Options

Medical: Simple eye drops or oral drugs are given to reduce the pressure in the eyes.

Laser: In select cases lasers are used to improve the drainage of aqueous humor from the eye.

Surgery: In advanced cases or when medical/laser fails, surgical procedures like Trabeculectomy, Tube Shunt, or Micro Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) are used.

First hospital in Region to Perform MIGS

Glaucoma can slowly damage the eye without early warning signs. At Baweja Multispeciality Hospital in Ropar, we utilise the latest treatment, Micro-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), to protect your vision. Unlike older glaucoma surgeries that require large incisions and prolonged healing, MIGS is performed through tiny openings in the eye, making it a safe, painless, and quick recovery process.

iStent is the world’s smallest medical implant, yet it plays a big role in treating glaucoma, one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness. It is a tiny, biocompatible device placed inside the eye during Micro-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) to help lower eye pressure safely and effectively. Glaucoma damages vision when fluid inside the eye doesn’t drain properly, causing pressure to build up. The iStent creates a new pathway for fluid to flow out naturally, reducing eye pressure and protecting the optic nerve from further damage.

At Baweja Multispeciality Hospital in Ropar, we are proud to be the first hospital in the region to perform MIGS. Under the expertise of Dr. Varun Baweja, the first surgeon in India certified for 4 MIGS devices - iStent Inject, OMNI, Hydrus, and Preserflo, patients receive world-class glaucoma care without needing to travel abroad.
